Saturday Brunch at Canteen

Canteen – Madison, WI – 111 S Hamilton St
Pretty Wall Decoration

Was excited to see Food Fight has added another new restaurant to their lineup. Stopped by for brunch after the Saturday Farmers Market. We arrived shortly after they opened at 9a and were greeted warmly by the staff.

After ordering our coffee and juice. (Note – the coffee is from Just Coffee Cooperative, fair trade and organic, roasted right here in Madison) The waitress brought us a cute little brown bag filled with “Duritos”, a puffed wheat snack shaped like a wagon wheel, seasoned with chile, lime and tajin spice. Just the right amount of spice to lime ratio. Our waitress informed us that the first bag is complimentary, additional bags can be purchased for $1 a bag.

My husband ordered the Chilaquiles. ($8) Described on the menu as: corn tortilla chips, puya chile sauce, sunny side up eggs, avocado, black beans, crema, cotija cheese, radish, cilantro, onion, sesame seeds, scallion. He added the carnitas for $3. The plate arrived filled with all fresh ingredients. The pork was tender and the egg fried to a beautiful sunny side up.

I went the taco route. Bacon and Egg (soft scrambled eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, sharp cheddar cheese, salsa verde, scallions) and Ranchero Breakfast (soft scrambled eggs, refried black beans, chihuahua cheese, salsa ranchero, scallions). Each were only $3. They arrived with double shells. Which turned out to be a good thing because they were stuffed so full of fresh tasty ingredients is was easy to divide into four tacos. The only downfall for me was that the shells were corn shells. Now this is just a personal thing, I prefer flour. Don’t get me wrong corn shell lovers will be very happy with the shells.

Breakfast Tacos

Hey, just noticed on the kids’ menu they do have flour shells…. Wonder if this “big kid” could get it swapped out next time. Because, there will be a next time for brunch! We are also eager to try dinner.

Food was delicious, atmosphere was adorable and the staff friendly.
